Start Your Own Non Profit Organisation

Non Profit Organisations (NPOs)  are institutions that conduct their affairs primarily for the purpose of assisting other individuals, groups, or causes (rather than garnering profits for the owners / founders) and range from small community action groups to large social enterprises

Forming a new NPO in the UK is essentially about  deciding what type of NPO and then choosing an appropriate legal structure  to determine the way you will govern your organisation. For example, you may choose to operate as a Charity (organisation type) and use the CIO legal structure as your governance set up.

The following is a summary of the three main Non Profit Organistion types (Charities, Social Enterprises and General Non Profit)   and a link to the Legal Structures you can use to form your new  non profit organisation :

Charities

A Charity is an organisation that is established and operated for charitable purposes  (e.g. feeding the homeless, religious activities, human rights, etc ) and can prove that their activities provide a tangible benefit to the public at large (i.e. is open to all).  A charity that has income over £5,000  (or has a CIO legal structure) must register with  the Charity Commission.

Social Enterprises

Social Enterprises can be defined as organisations that run profit making enterprises  in order to create employment  opportunities  for disadvantaged groups, and/or reinvest profits back into the business or into projects that tackle community and social problems.

General Non Profit Organsation

Not all organisations that carry out philanthropic work are charities and not all enterprises  that trade for the benefit of the community are social enterprises . General Non Profit Organisations  is a broad term we use for non profit organisations where the charitable or social enterprise categories  will not be appropriate (or desirable), or where they do not meet the criteria of these categories.

Legal Stuctures

A legal structure is a set of rules (as laid down by the law) which determine how you govern  your organisation. as well as define your ventures legal responsibilities.  Choosing  the correct NPO legal structure is very important because the choice directly impacts how you can raise money, the protection you get from business debts, tax issues, the level of public accountability, etc.
