Non Profit Organisation

Non Profit Organisations (NPOs) are institutions that conduct their affairs primarily for the purpose of assisting other individuals, groups, or causes rather than garnering profits for individuals owners or founders of the organisation.

Examples of NPOs include ;

In reward for their efforts the founder (s) of NPOs can draw a salary from the organisation and, in some cases (such as a community interest companies), receive moderate dividends if they hold shares in the organisation.

Generally, there are three types of NPOs as follows :

Charities

A Charity is an organisation that is established and operated for charitable purposes (e.g. feeding the homeless, religious activities, human rights, etc ) and can prove that their activities provide a tangible benefit to the public at large (i.e. is open to all). A charity that has income over £5,000 (or has a CIO legal structure) must register with the Charity Commission.

Social Enterprises

Social Enterprises can be defined as organisations that run profit making enterprises in order to create employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups, and/or reinvest profits back into the business or into projects that tackle community and social problems.

General Non Profit Organisations

General Non Profit Organisations is a broad term we use for non profit organisations where the charitable or social enterprise categories are not appropriate (or desirable), or where they do not meet the criteria of these categories. Indeed, not all organisations that carry out philanthropic work are charities and all enterprises that trade for the benefit of the community may not be a social enterprise. Such organisations include co-operatives, membership organisations, Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs), etc.
