FUNDING

 LOANS & DEBT FINANCE

Grants can be defined as funds  given to a person or organisation  that is designated for a specific purpose and does not need to bWithout doubt,  Grants  are the perfect form of business funding as there is no need to pay it back, no interest to pay( as with loans )  and no need to relinquish any control of your enterprise (as with equity finance).

Loans & Debt Finance                                                                                                                                                                      Loans and debt finance refers to borrowed money – that is funds made available to you that you need to pay back with interest (in instalments) over an agreed period of time.

Therefore, before taking on any debt you will need to be sure you will be able to repay the money. Indeed, some lenders will want to see a cashflow projection or even a business plan before lending you money.

Start up & early stage organisations can use repayable finance for a number of purposes including :

General start up costs                                                                                                                                                                            As a bridging loan until other income is received                                                                                                                              To support working capital requirements e.g. purchase of stock or taking on new staff

To fund an asset purchase and/or development

Growth initiatives

There are many types of repayable finance on the market so it is essential to figure out which ones are best for your particular circumstances which sometimes is not obvious

For example, in some situations invoice financing may be better than a cheaper flexible line of credit option if a business has debtors with high profit margins and is looking for a solution to wild variations in cashflow. Similarly, if you are a social enterprise it would generally be better to prioritise funding from social investment funders over commercial lenders.

Apply For Loan                                                                                                                                            If you want to apply  for a loan our Search & Apply service will seek out the best debt finance opportunities, from a wide variety sources, to ensure you get the correct type of finance for your organization`s circumstances.

Our search and apply process can be summarised in the following three steps :

Step 1. Tell us how much you need to borrow and what it’s for (e.g. general start up funding).

Step 2. We’ll match your requirements with almost every debt finance opportunity on the market and then provide you with a list of appropriate funders and offers.

Step 3. We’ll help you apply to any of the lenders you choose

The good thing about this methodology is that you are in control. You receive the list of possible funders and offers so it is up to you to decide which funders to contact and whether to do the applications yourself.

However, with so much at stake we recommend certain applications be carried out by experts who know the market inside out to maximise your chance of success.  So as part of the service (at Step3) we, or one of our specialist partners, are here to help you with any applications (e.g.  to produce a requested cashflow forecast).

Grants for Social Purpose Organisations are given to cover the direct and indirect costs of specific progams that relate to activities solving a clearly defioned social need, capacity building, research and development , etc. SPO funders are also increasingly keen on funding new activities which over time could become self sustaining.

Grants for businesses are generally intended to encourage entrepreneurial activity, to create new jobs and stimulate the economy particularly in the fields of innovation, energy, exports and the environment. Business grants can come in many forms including money, subsidies for labour and other key resources, vouchers for equipment and tools, etc.

There are over 4,000 grant funders for social mission organisations and over 200 business grant funding programs (covering a huge range of issues) but the competition is fierce  and the actual process of securing a grant is complicated, drawn out and has many potential pitfalls.

Having a professional  independent review of an application/ proposal you have written is always a sensible thing to do.
